Send in your questions that you might have...

Hello to all who view and read this blog. This is a post to ask for suggestions on other topics about learning the guitar that I could help to answer.

At the moment, I have attempted to answer all the more common questions on the basics of playing the guitar. If I have missed out any topics that you might want to know, feel free to either post a reply to this, or even to send me an email using the link on the top right hand corner of the screen (below my picture).

Send in your questions and if I am able to, I will attempt to answer them through the blog.

could you tell me the plucking and strumming patterns used in the song "your name" by paul baloche?

i can see the basic pattern is D DDUD, but i wanna know the variations u used. thanks.

hi Lee,

For the song "Your Name", what I did for the beginning was to firstly strum the bass notes of the chord, then followed by the treble strings, then an upstroke, followed by a down and and up. After which, you change to the next chord.

But if you don't want to use it, you can just use a simple D, D, DU.

I have been a big follower of your youtube channel. I chanced upon this blog only an hour back. It would be really nice to look at some kind of a daily practice routine / exercises that every beginner could follow before getting on to singing practice. Thanks!!

could you introduce some plucking patterns that you use? i read the thread about plucking, but couldnt find any plucking patterns dealt in later threads.

Hey
I don't really have some guitar questions but spiritual ones. Would it be okay to ask you anyways?

daniel said...

Hi Isaac, you can ask me general questions too. Feel free to write an email to me using the contact form. The link is on my main screen page, just below my picture

I've watched a bunch of Daniel Choo's instructional videos for learning to play guitar. Awesome. I've found them very helpful. Much appreciated. I think he has a pretty good voice too. I would like to see some videos where, rather than teach, he simply entertains. With the full compliment of a band.

could you give advice on how to properly learn to play a song? that is, to learn it quickly and to make sure that you're doing the right thing.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for all the help! How did you manage to write your own tabs and strumming patterns via listening? Do you have any sources that teaches how to do that? Sorry for the trouble! :)

Hi LieCong,

for the strumming patterns, what I do is to listen to the song and to hear what they are strumming. Basically, I have compiled a list of "common strumming patterns" that I have heard so far. It can be found on my blog post about strumming patterns. As for tabs, I also listen and figure them out. I learned all this by myself and not from any book etc. So, I would say it takes time to be able to do that.

oh ok.. thanks thanks for the reply!

hi Daniel , it's been 5 years i think since i played the guitar, but it seems now is the only time i'm improving. Is it because i dont know how to sing or my foundation?. I remember when i first try to strum a guitar, my fingers get wounded T_T.. thanks

Nice place here. Keep it up Daniel.

Here's a question:

Often in some events, we read in the programme booklet of a musical piece being played "in " e.g. in C, what is it really?

Surely they're not strumming (guitar) or hitting (the piano keys) the C chord throughout the whole duration, or playing just the note "C" right?

I'm certain I hear different melodies; you know, those highs and lows. *wondering*

daniel said...

Hi Pendantic,

when a musical piece is said to be in "C", it is actually saying that the piece is paid in the key of C.

Each song is played in a key. This key gives the song its pitch. For example, if you sing a song, and the song is too high for you, you can change the key of the song to a lower key, and be able to sing the song.

For more information on what a key is, you can read this post: http://basicsofguitar.blogspot.com/2009/11/how-to-changetranspose-key-of-song.html

Hope it helps!

Hi Daniel,

Will you help me figure out the strumming patterns for these two songs?

Thank you. :)

daniel said...

Hi mei,

for Kabau Hang, it is a 4/4 beat song. You can use the D,D,UDUDD,DU strumming pattern to play it.

For Everlasting God, you can use D,D,DU (2 beats) for the verse and D,D,UDUDD,DU for the chorus (4 beats)

Hope it helps!

Hi daniel,

Thank you for your previous help.

You probably answer this question already. How do I know which chords that a song is playing? Any tips on how to listen to the music well? There are some songs that I like to learn to play but there aren't any chords for them so I just like to learn how to distinguished the chords on my own.

daniel said...

Hi Mei,

I have done a post on how I figure out songs, or at least, the process which I go about figuring out a song. You can read it here:

http://basicsofguitar.blogspot.com/2010/05/how-do-i-learn-figure-out-song-on.html

I hope it will help you. And if you need any more clarifications, feel free to ask!

Can you help me with the strumming pattern to "Learning to be the light" by new world son?

Graham Choo said...

Hi scooterj101,

I listened to the song, it is a 4/4 beat song, and you can use either the D,D,UDUDD,DU strumming pattern or D,D,DU, D,D,DU strumming pattern.

You can look at:

http://basicsofguitar.blogspot.com/2009/05/how-to-determine-strumming-pattern-for.html

4/4 beat, pattern 2 and pattern 3.

I thank God for your heart of sharing your talent. I've learned to play guitar through your videos. Can I request for a tutorial on Grace by Laura Story? Thanks so much! Godbless!

ketz said...

Hi Daniel! I know you for a long time because I'm one of those person who loves your tutorial in youtube. By the way, I play "reaching for you" last Sunday in our church for special number. I watched your video of "Reaching for you" and I noticed that it would be better to play F#m instead of C#m in the chorus of the song, what do you think?

daniel said...

Hi Ketz,

thanks for all the encouragement!

For the song "Reaching For You", the reason why I used F#m instead of C#m in the chorus is because that is the chord that I hear Hillsong using.

However, with that being said, I guess you could also use C#m because it sounds just as nice.

Hope it helps!

Dear Daniel and Graham

Kudos to you both for starting this blog. Its really helpful. I have been playing guitar (accoustic) for three months now. How I have structured my exercise is that I play Ephrygian Scale, Major and Minor Scales at Beats Per Minute starting from 60 all the way to 300 BPM. Apart from this I have just made a list of all the Chords that I shud know. and I have to play that every chord in differnt strumming patterns,.Please let me know what else I should do to become a good guitarist. An accoustic one)
